Captured at millimeter wavelengths: a flare from the classical T Tauri star DQ Tauri

For several hours on 2008 April 19, the T Tauri spectroscopic binary DQ Tau was observed to brighten, reaching a maximum detected flux of 468 mJy and likely making it (briefly) the brightest object at 3 mm in the Taurus star-forming region. We present the light curve of a rarely before observed millimeter flare originating in the region around a pre-main-sequence star, and the first from a clas...

Spectropolarimetry of the Classical T Tauri Star TW Hydrae

We present high resolution (R ≈ 60, 000) circular spectropolarimetry of the classical T Tauri star TW Hydrae. We analyze 12 photospheric absorption lines and measure the net longitudinal magnetic field for 6 consecutive nights. While no net polarization is detected the first five nights, a significant photospheric field of Bz = 149± 33 G is found on the sixth night. To rule out spurious instrum...

A Hot Wind from the Classical T Tauri Stars: TW Hydrae and T Tauri

Spectroscopy of the infrared He I (λ10830) line with KECK/NIRSPEC and IRTF/CSHELL and of the ultraviolet C III (λ977) and O VI (λ1032) emission with FUSE reveals that the classical T Tauri star TW Hydrae exhibits P Cygni profiles, line asymmetries, and absorption indicative of a continuous, fast (∼400 km/s), hot (∼300,000 K) accelerating outflow with a mass loss rate ∼10–10 M⊙ yr −1 or larger. ...

A Third Star in the T Tauri System.

New speckle holographic images of the T Tauri infrared companion (T Tauri IRC; T Tauri S) reveal it to be a double system with a sky-projected separation of 0&farcs;05, corresponding to a linear distance of 7 AU. The presence of this third star may account for the relative paucity of dust surrounding the IRC.
